Curling smoke, Victoria’s gate,
The whistle blows, I’m nearly late.
Through London’s haze, the pistons pound,
Westward to where the palms are found.
And the Great Western Railway is rolling
From Victoria down to Penzance
And it’s rolling, rolling, rolling
Rolling, rolling, rolling
For two quid and a handful of pence
Past patchwork fields and rivers wide,
Great Western carries us with pride.
Red roofs flash by in golden light,
Then Exeter fades into night.
And the Great Western Railway is rolling
From Victoria down to Penzance
And it’s rolling, rolling, rolling
Rolling, rolling, rolling
For two quid and a handful of pence
The ocean’s waves they come quite near,
Salt on the wind, the night is clear.
Plymouth’s lights, a fleeting glance,
On through the dark to far Penzance.
And the Great Western Railway is rolling
From Victoria down to Penzance
And it’s rolling, rolling, rolling
Rolling, rolling, rolling
For two quid and a handful of pence
At journey’s end, the stars shine bright,
The rails cool down in a Cornish night.
A dream of steel and Cornwall’s shore -
A dream of you whom I adore.
And the Great Western Railway is rolling
From Victoria down to Penzance
And it’s rolling, rolling, rolling
Rolling, rolling, rolling
For two quid and a handful of pence
