Louie’s early professional career started out performing on the Honky Tonk Blues & R&B circuit around the USA, eventually landing an organist position with the group,

The Mighty Gospel Giants of Brooklyn. The Giants recorded three records for Mercury and had a Gospel hit “It’s A needed Time”

In 1985, Louie became a part of The Band’s legacy: co-producing, engineering and performing on their three final albums, Jericho, High on the Hog and Jubilation. He became a collaborating touring member of The Band from 1985 to 1999 until Rick Danko’s passing. It was during this time that Rick Danko christened Hurwitz Professor Louie”.

As leader of his own group, Professor Louie & The Crowmatix have tirelessly toured the world for over twenty five years and continue to release music on his Woodstock Records Label. Singles on Blind Raccoon and Nola Blue Labels. In 2025 new recording Crowin’ Around the 18th album by Professor Louie & The Crowmatix. Is currently on 157 radio stations across the country ..All 18 albums are on Hurwitz’s Woodstock Records label, and so far all have landed on various radio charts, reflecting AAA, Americana, college, blues, and Jamband radio airplay.

In addition to his work with The Band, Professor Louie has played with, engineered or produced an incredible roster of artists spanning a wide array of genres including: The Band, Graham Parker, Commander Cody, Dave Brubeck, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, solo projects of Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Jay Black, Jesse McReynolds, Blondie, Jose Feliciano, Livingston Taylor, The Fugs, Artie Traum, Guy Davis, John Sebastian, Oumar Konate, Buckwheat Zydeco, Mercury Rev, Rory Block, Bill Keith, Jean Redpath to name a few.

In 2024 Louie recorded and performed the music with Guy Davis for The Tony Award winning play Purlie Victorius starring Leslie Odum Jr.

Professor Louie’s Woodstock Rockin’ Revue radio program on eclectic AAA stalwart, WKZE-FM for the past six years has gained a large following here in The States and Internationally with friends who are all a part of the tapestry of the Woodstock musical experience.
