Flipside: SPRING FEVER – Here’s one of the really great uptempo songs from my music collection. The Velvets hailed from Odessa, Texas. Group members were Virgil Johnson (lead), Mark Prince, Clarence Rigsby, William Solomon and Robert Thursby. Johnson was a local DJ (“V. J. the D. J.”) and Blackshear Junior-Senior High School English teacher. He heard two of his students sing and recruited two more to form The Velvets. They performed locally and they were discovered in 1960 by Roy Orbison who was instrumental in bringing them to the attention of producer Fred Foster, owner of Orbison’s recording label Monument Records.

Fred Foster, who became one of Nashvillle’s giants in the music industry touching the careers of some of the most famous Country artists, was the owner of the newly located Monument Records in the outskirts of Nashville, TN. In late 1960, he recorded The Velvets in Nashville’s RCA studios using the most talented studio musicians with Boots Randolph on sax, Floyd Cramer on piano and he also used violins on the recording.

The Velvets had 2 songs charted nationally on Billboard. Of course, their biggest “TONIGHT (Could Be The Night)” charted in July 1961 for 9 weeks and reached #26.

The Earls recorded and released a Disco version of “TONIGHT (Could Be The Night)” (Woodbury #101) in 1977.
